Promoting British Values at Onside Education

At Onside Education, we are committed to embedding the principles of British Values throughout our curriculum, culture, and everyday practice. We believe that these values are key to developing the whole child—socially, morally, spiritually, and culturally—and help prepare our students to become responsible, respectful, and active citizens in modern Britain.

We recognise that the consistent modelling of these values by all staff is essential to their success, and we embed them across all learning experiences, enrichment opportunities, and day-to-day interactions.

 The Fundamental British Values Are:

Democracy

We actively promote the principles of democracy throughout the curriculum and school life. Students are encouraged to express their views, take part in decisions, and understand the importance of having a voice. Through our Student Voice, regular feedback mechanisms, and project-based learning, students play an active role in shaping their experience at Onside.

The Rule of Law

Students are taught to understand the importance of rules and laws—whether in school, the local community, or wider society. We explore the reasons behind laws, their purpose in protecting individuals and society, and the consequences of breaking them. Behaviour expectations at Onside are clear, consistent, and restorative, helping students take responsibility for their actions in a supportive environment.

Individual Liberty

We foster a culture that encourages students to develop confidence, independence, and resilience. Through carefully structured support, we empower learners to make informed choices, express their views respectfully, and explore their own identities and aspirations. Enrichment activities and personalised learning pathways give students the freedom to pursue their interests and passions.

Mutual Respect

Respect is a core value at Onside and underpins everything we do. All members of our community—students, staff, families, and visitors—are expected to treat one another with courtesy and dignity. We teach our students the value of kindness, empathy, and collaboration, and promote positive relationships as a key to success in learning and life.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Onside is an inclusive and diverse setting where all cultures, religions, and backgrounds are valued and respected. Through our PSHE, Citizenship, and Enrichment curriculum, students explore a wide range of faiths and beliefs, developing understanding, awareness, and a sense of shared humanity. Assemblies, theme days, and cultural celebrations reinforce this learning, helping students embrace diversity and reject prejudice.

Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism

We are fully committed to safeguarding our students from radicalisation and extremism. Our approach is guided by the Government’s Prevent and Channel strategies, and we ensure staff are trained to identify and act on any early signs of vulnerability.

We are aware that certain factors—such as isolation, discrimination, family stress, cultural disconnection, or personal hardship—can increase risk, particularly in young people. At Onside, we provide a safe, supportive environment that builds resilience, critical thinking, and self-worth.

Our aim is to equip students with the skills and confidence to challenge extremist views, respect others’ beliefs, and positively contribute to society. We believe that education is the strongest safeguard against radicalisation, and we embed these principles through open dialogue, respectful debate, and inclusive practice.

Our Commitment

At Onside Education, we help young people re-engage in learning, develop their sense of identity, and build the skills and attitudes needed to thrive in modern Britain. By promoting British Values across our provision, we support every learner to become an active, informed, and compassionate citizen.
