At Onside Education, we are committed to nurturing the holistic development of every young person. Through our integrated approach to Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) education, we aim to support students to grow into confident, thoughtful, and respectful individuals who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Our Vision
We believe that all students should be supported to realise their full potential—academically, emotionally, and socially. SMSC development is embedded across our curriculum and broader educational offer, enabling every learner to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience.

Our goal is to prepare students to make informed decisions, take responsibility for their actions, and become active, engaged members of society. We achieve this through personalised learning experiences, pastoral support, enrichment activities, and strong relationships across the school community.

Promoting British Values
As part of our SMSC provision, we actively promote the Fundamental British Values, as defined by the Department for Education:

  • Democracy: Students are encouraged to express their opinions, take part in decision-making, and understand how democratic systems work through activities like Student Voice, community projects and themed assemblies.
  • The Rule of Law: We teach students about the importance of laws in school and society. Our consistent approach to behaviour and restorative practices help students understand justice, fairness, and responsibility.
  • Individual Liberty: Students are supported to make informed choices in a safe and supportive environment. They are encouraged to explore their identities, develop independence, and express themselves freely.
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance: Onside is an inclusive and diverse community. We teach students to respect different cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds, helping them develop empathy and celebrate diversity.

Our Approach to SMSC
SMSC development runs through every aspect of school life. It is delivered through:

  • A broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum
    • Assemblies, group discussions and cultural celebrations
    • PSHE, Citizenship and Character Education lessons
    • Enrichment and offsite learning experiences
    • Strong pastoral care and relationship-building
    • Partnerships with local community groups and services

How We Make SMSC Visible
• Students participate in community projects, student councils and themed awareness weeks.
• We offer regular enrichment activities including creative arts, sport, and wellbeing.
• Our curriculum includes ethical discussions, cultural exploration, and active learning about diversity and equality.
• We address topics like online safety, anti-bullying, mental health, careers and life skills.

Preventing Extremism and Promoting Inclusion
We are fully committed to safeguarding students from radicalisation and extremism. Staff receive training in line with the Prevent Strategy, and we create a safe environment where students learn to question, think critically, and understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Impact and Outcomes
By the time students leave Onside Education, they will have:

  • Gained knowledge and understanding of life in modern Britain
    • Developed respect for the law, others’ beliefs, and the democratic process
    • Built the confidence to express themselves and contribute positively to society
    • Understood the importance of equality, tolerance, and ethical responsibility

We regularly monitor and evaluate our SMSC provision to ensure that it remains relevant, impactful, and aligned with our vision of Re-engaging Learners, Empowering Futures.
